Dunmore Silage Day 2014

Dunmore Vintage Club will be hosting yet another Silage Day on Sunday August 3rd 2014 (August Bank Holiday weekend)

The show, being hosted in the same site as the 2012 show, boasts 35 acres of Silage to be cut on the day. The event lineup for the day is still being finalised, however strong conciderations of an emphasis on Double Chops and machinery from the Classics era of the 1980’s is being considered as one of the main events.

As always with the Dunmore show, we are keen to find and deomonstrate rare, iconic or historic tractors or silage machinery.

Registrations for the 2014 event will open shortly

European Class Tractor Pulling:As always with Dunmore Show, Tractor pulling is inevitable since our first ever show. Using a Ground Driven sleigh purposely built by members of the Dunmore Vintage Club, and weight Classes going from vintage tractors right through to modern day machines

Weight Classes:

3.5 Tonne

4.5 Tonne

5.5 Tonne

6.5 Tonne

8 Tonne

Unlimited weight Class

As always Weight Scales will be present & all Tractors must be weighed for each class they enter.

In the Unlimited Weight class there will be a demonstration of a Modern Day Giant versus a combination of Vintage Tractors. This demo pull is to see how many Vintage Tractors it takes to out-pull the Dunmore Agri Services owned Case Puma 195

Log Skidding

Log Skidding is a new venture by Dunmore Vintage Club, having never been tried in Ireland before but with quite a large following in Europe, it is essentially a Timed race around a circuit consisting of an Uphill part to test power and traction, at the very top of the hill the driver will have to navigate sharp turns where Differential locks will have to be disengaged as they make their way back down the hill to the start finish line. Split up into weight classes of 2.5 Tonne, 3.5 Tonne and 4.5 Tonne This event will be taking place as the Larger classes are competing in the Tractor Pulling

Classic Grassmen

Check out Dunmore’s 2012 show from 2:28 on GRASSMEN’s latest production preview – Classic Grassmen, the full DVD will be available sometime in the spring.

More silage cutting again this year anyone?

We regret to announce that the 2013 Grass Event is off for anyone that has planned on attending already.. For obvious reasons the farming community has been hard hit in recent months with the shortage of silage, and with the sheer scale of the show along with the support of silage men throughout the length & breath of the country traveling long distances with machinery We have decided that a Bi-Annual show would be better suited for the Large Grass Event, instead for this year we have decided to host a small scale show focusing on all the other stuff that gets forgotten at the Big show

Bring on 2014 –

Show 2014

Dunmore Silage Day
– August Bank Holiday Weekend

Plans for an even bigger show in 2014 possibly in a new BIGGER location with even more grass to cut, Intentions for a Double Chop record, Ideas and suggestions to features, competitions & displays are gladly welcomed

We are currently looking for sponsors for the 2014 event, machinery manufacturers & dealers interested in working demonstrations ect

yet again the focus is on the rarest vintage & historic machinery being demonstrated on the day.

The historic displays being worked side by side with the most modern machinery available today gives this show its Unique characteristic in catering for all men women & children that get possessed by the smell of freshly cut grass

Show 2012 Aftermath

Show 2012 is over, the big talk is about only accident at the show, which of all things happened to be an aviation incident, we did our best to watch what was on the ground without watching the skies aswell. A Paraglider lost control of his machine on a flyover & crashed into ESB High Voltage lines. Luckily escaping with just a broken nose, damaged Pride & a mangled Paraglider.

Unfortunately our show site got very spread out but we could only pick dry spots to plant the show due to ground conditions with the exceptional summers rain we had. Please take into concideration the bravery of attempting to run this show regardless of what the weatherman was to curse us with. we cant or dont control the weather, we’re lucky we pulled it off atall & we’re thankful to those who supported us & came out on the day especially to those silage men that came from far & wide with arctic’s & rigids with tractors trailers & harvesters to cut some grass at show 2012.

Single Chop World Record: 105 Single Chop harvesters made their way to the show, after some never making it to the field, and several misfortunes later a grand total of 86 harvesters cut simultaneously

What we do know is it took almost 9 minutes before the last harvester started cutting, bar the breakdowns & machines getting stuck they were cutting simultaneously for 24 minutes 43 seconds, and it was 41 minutes before every blade of grass was swiped clean in the 25 acre field.
Some of the casualties we do know about, several more to be added:
Nuffield 1060 – water jacket burst
International 1055 – UG harvester gearbox broke
One of the two lads that drove from bandbridge in their Massey Ferguson tractors, the engine was beginning to sieze up. was either the 35 or the 65, yet to be verified.
Fordson Major – got stuck & was nudged out several minutes later
International – Pulled out for unknown reason
Ford 2000 & 1959 Green Taarup – Never made it to the field
Massey 165 & Taarup 43″ – Never made it to the field
David Brown 990 – PTO trouble
Fordson Major – Headgasket

The History Of Silage Machinery, we managed to have represented on the day:

1880’s when silage was first introduced to Ireland & the UK – The horse drawn finger bar mower & the horse cart

1920’s – McCormack Green Crop Loader – Unfortunately this machine failed us for this year with a siezed bearing & planetary gears beginning to bind. It will be working nextyear & thats a promise

1930’s – Wilder CutLift, the first single pass machine ever made was represented on the day by an Original Badge Plate on loan from Jim Fisher from North Cumbria, UK. We may have drawn one out after the show. Hopefully!

1950’s – Silorator, a pre single chop machine that would put some of the single chops to shame with the blow on it. the distance it was able to side fill wet grass was exceptional, being powered by a Porsche Master side filling a second porsche.

Late 50’s – 1959 Green Taarup, we were so overwhelmed that the club member that owns it hadnt time to cut with it

1960’s – New Holland SP1880, First Self Propelled in Ireland.

1970’s – Mengele SF300, just an extremely rare machine & a lot of history attached to Josef Mengele, aka the Angel of Death. we had this Side filling into two Deutz 8005’s…. A completely german affair

Double Chops, Precision Chops, Picking Wagons from the Taarup 1015 to Malone’s Brand New machines being powered by the most modern Fendt Vario technology in transmissions all working side by side in a 12 acre field

So Here’s a rough cut of some of the machines working on the day, only a teaser of some of the footage caputred

The rest… i’ll finish later

Building on the success of lastyears show, we have 25 acres of silage to cut with single chop foragers at the 2012 show on August 5th, we are expecting up on 100 pre 1982 machines to take part so get your registrations in early, registrations can be updated at any time by just contacting us

2011 video:

THe 2012 show will also play host to a History of silage machinery demonstration, one machine in particular we are looking to find is the Wilder Cutlift, built in Reading, UK in 1935 by John Wilder LTD this was the first single pass machine ever built. It featured a Finger Bar mower followed by a picking mechanism to lift the grass into the trailer. this machine was the last inventions before the war. This machine built in relatively small numbers, but a few made its way to northern Ireland where the Northern Ireland Office sponsored a feature film entitled Simple Silage. It was the only film sponsored by the NIO durding the war, its aim was to encourage farmers to make silage rather than import grain.
The film can be found in Museums across northern ireland : Digital Film Archive NI

Image thanks to Danielle in the Museum of English Country Life in Reading
Wilder CutLift

If you have come across this machine or a variant of this machine Please do get in contact with us, it is the missing link in the extensive history of silage machinery that will be working on the day. (variants of the machine can be very unusual but based on the same idea, it was updated & modified several times between 1935 & 1945 in particular)

Location:
Coordinates
53.595039,-8.754648

Update 26/5/2012
Over the next few days i will post the machines that with all going well will be working on the day, even one or two machines previous to the 1935 cutlift, and a very very rare Green Taarup Single Chop from 1959, (one of the first of the Taarup Harvester’s)

Update 5/7/2012
Aerial view picture of the site with lastyear’s show referenced

Update 14/7/2012
With the weather adversely affecting other Major shows, Dunmore Vintage Club is working on plans to see the show go ahead regardless, with works underway to make a road through the land to the silage fields we’re hoping it will be enough to counteract whatever the weather throws at us. Luckily enough the 2012 show is based on a hill

Update 20/07/2012
Long range forecast promising good weather for the show and on the few days on the leadup to the show, the bank holiday monday is promised very warm & sunny also… Its shaping up to be a great weekend weatherwise….. for now, fingers crossed!

Update 26/7/2012
Works commence on road to silage field & to vintage show dry ground to combat whatever the weather throws at us. We’ll have comfort with vintage cars not getting stuck or dirty & drawing down the silage pit.

Update 1/8/2012
Land Road complete, Single Chop Registrations soaring to near cutoff point *Get registered ASAP if you’re planning on bringing a harvester & make sure PTO guards are intact. Helicopter confirmed, & Hot Air Balloon Confirmed. There will be rides every few mins on the hot air balloon completely FREE and will rise 100 foot above the show.
